The ONLY Knots You'll Need as a Beginner in Fly Fishing: (see diagram)
There are a few key fly fishing knots that you need to know as a beginner in fly fishing; in fact, these are the ONLY knots that I use. As you fish more and more, you will find a group of knots that you really like to use. The fly fishing knots that I have listed are not all-inclusive, feel free to build your own list of favorite knots.
The Improved Clinch Knot is a must-know knot for fly fishing. I use this knot to tie my flies to my tippet and to tie a dropper line from one fly to another smaller fly. It's important that you perfect this knot, because too many big-o-fish have been lost due to this knot failing during the catch!

The Surgeon's Knot is the easiest, most effecient knot that I have found to tie my leader to my tippet. It's a smooth, small fly fishing knot that wont catch your line and get tangled.
The Nail Knot is the smoothest, most snag-proof fly fishing knot I have ever used to tie my fly line to my leader. You can tie this knot with any small, straight object; however, there is a clipper-tool that makes this knot even easier to tie. This knot takes some practice to really get it right, but once you've got it down, you'll never use any other knot to tie your fly line to your leader!
This Arbor Knot is the universal knot for tying your backing to your reel. It is very easy to tie and extremely effective. You'll never need another knot for tying your backing to your spool.

The Albright Knot is the knot of choice when it comes to tying your backing to your fly line. Next time that lunker takes you to your backing, you can be sure he wont break away with all your line.
